5 mins waling, there is a biggest Gym, pool, culture center in Uji. Also you can learn Japanese culture here with reasonable price. All students are Japanese people so you will have a chance to make a friend. For example, Ikebana(Japanese flower art), Igo(Japanese playing game), Cha-do(Green tea), Suibokuba(Japanese art) and etc... (First day I can go there with you as your host mother.)
 
10 mins waling, crossing a Tenjin bridge, the largest Post office in Uji, large shopping center(100yen shop, electronic shop, supermarket, DIY and garden shop) and Shimamura(clothe shop).
 
10 mins waling to other side, you can see historical green tea shops along the ujibashi shopping street. Over 100 shops!! Also you will have a special experience of Macha with professional tea server who can kindly speak English!! A lot of green tea products are available at Uji and compare to other place it is cheaper to buy it. Also Izakaya, Post offices, supermarkets, bookshop, cake and bread shops, gift shops and so much...
